Cornell's ECAC Rivals

11. Brown

There's really no rivalry here at all.  Brown is mostly a speed bump, periodically tripping Cornell up, but usually just a dull thud, quickly passed and as quickly forgotten.

10. Union

After elevating to D-1, Union enjoyed a few seasons of atypical success against Cornell. But since Schafer has the series under control, there is little energy in the strand when these teams meet.

9. Quinnipiac

One of the few ECAC rivals Cornell has met in an NCAA Tournament game.  QU looks like a strong competitor and a good rival in the not too distant future.

8. Yale

Despite Yale's periodic rises to contention, a low-key rivalry.

7. Princeton

The Tigers ended Cornell's two year championship streak with a play-in game win in '98, then shocked Cornell by coming from behind in the closing minutes in the second game of the '99 Quints.  Before and since, not a notable opponent.

6. Dartmouth

After twenty years as the league doormat, the Big Green have built a successful program over the last decade, and with that they have gained prominence as a rival.

5. RPI

We stole Ned!  We stole Red!  RPI gained respectable rival status with their '85 NCAA title team, and has held it since with an explosive, unpredictable style.  There have been many great games between these teams, most of them in Houston Field House, the summit being Cornell's dramatic upset win in the '98 Quints.

4. Colgate

Cornell's travel partner, and for that generally a home-and-home encounter in middle January.  The Red have done more damage to Colgate over the years than vice versa. Still, this can at times be a heated and physical rivalry -- they straddle the line between the second-thoughts and the arch rivals

3. St. Lawrence

Easy to hate.  Since the Saints knocked off the Red 3 times in 4 years in the ECAC Final Four at Boston Garden in the early 1990's, they have had Cornell's number.  The Saints most recently dropped Cornell in a fantastic ECAC SF in overtime in '00, then won the ECAC final from the Red in '01.

2. Clarkson

A great opponent and a classy program -- always up there in the league, and enjoyable to play.  The rivalry is marked by sportsmanship above and beyond the call, given the almost monotonous recurrence of tight, vital late RS and playoff meetings.  If course it helps that Cornell always seems to come out on top when it really matters, including in Cornell's 7th and 9th championships, and of course the capstone of their perfect 1970 NCAA championship season.

1. Harvard

The Great Satan.  One of Coach Schafer's most amazing achievements is his dominance in this series, which at one point in the early 90's had run 0-17-3 in favor of Harvard in regular season meetings.  Playoff victories over the Crimson in '90 and 2000 at Lynah and in the '96, '03, and '05 ECAC Championship game are among the great moments of the Schafer era.  Losses in the '02 (in double overtime) and '06 finals are arguably the biggest disappointments in the history of this rivalry.
