Vermont A Brief History

Oh, where to begin..?

Vermont had a credible Div. II program in the 70's, and after one abortive effort to make the big time, they finally came to stay.  A history notable for little more than the uncanny ability to beat Harvard in big games had a brief boost with the arrival of a pair of French-Canadian elves in the late 90's, but those UVM teams underachieved once again... the nickname was lampooned as the "Can't-Amounts."

The 2000 dawned.  A new day.  And truly bizarre allegations of hazing, drinking, and sexual behavior which would be most charitably described as suggestively homoerotic.

The program was also found to be covering up, lying to investigators... in many eyes, UVM's decision to cancel the remainder of the 2000 season without notifying the ECAC compounded the felony, as the gyrations of the league to protect their travel partner Dartmouth resulted in putting the rest of the league and its fans to severe annoyance.

Suffice that if the Cornell pep band adds "Elephant Walk" to its repertoire, our friends from Burlington will ever come to mind.  2005 marked the final season of ECAC play for Vermont, who retreated to the less demanding academic confines of Hockey East. They honored their conference history by once again failing to win the ECAC title.
