A Brief History
Colgate's shining moment came in 1990, and it lasted less than a period --
the time it took for Wisconsin to savage them in the NCAA title game. But that
season still haunts our memories. Colgate always seems just on the verge of
becoming a big winner. Then fate intervenes and their hopes are frustrated.
Hence, despite a perennially strong offense and good coaching, the Red Raiders
have made it to the ECAC Final Four rarely in the long history of the tournament.
Lately, Cornell has been responsible for some of that frustration. In four ECAC Quarterfinal series games at Lynah in the 90's, the Big Red swept Colgate, outscoring them 34-8.
Yet that has been an anomaly: the series between these traveling partners
has been balanced. In 1997-98, they took this to the extreme, carrying both
league meetings and a non-conference neutral site game to 2-2 ties after regulation,
while in each conference game, the visitor notched the overtime winner. Recent
seasons have seen more one-goal games, notable for the rough play both on the
ice and, too frequently, in the stands.
