A Brief History
Brown has few highlights in their long hockey history. The seasons since the
reformation of the 12-team ECAC have been their most accomplished, and even
within that period the Bears finished in the bottom third nearly as often as
the top.
The low point was the 1-25-0 record of 1989. Stories vary as to what happened
next, but two or more of the incoming players from the next class were apparently
permitted to stretch, if not violate, the principles which govern Ivy academics.
In short, they weren't qualified to enter Brown (a curious concept in itself),
yet to save the program the league looked the other way.
After that special dispensation, the Bears skated some decent teams. The hallmark
was a punishing physical style which often led to altercations (especially,
for some reason, with RPI). When several gifted offensive athletes did join
Brown, the team underachieved, and they have traveled to the ECAC Final Four
just twice over the last 21 seasons.
